The Route 66 Cookbook is the definitive culinary
guide to the Mother Road because hundreds of fantastic people shared their
stories, their memories, and their recipes. Assembling the cookbook was one of the most rewarding
experiences of my life. There
was a story at every stop. As a
result, I gained a tremendous appreciation for those who have lived and worked
most of their lives along America’s Main Street
The book chronicles all kinds of eateries along
the 2400 miles of Route 66.
Mom and pop chefs,
experienced griddle masters, and just plain good cooks shared over 250
time-tested recipes along with their stories.
Photographs and menus were added from such unforgettable food stops as
the U Drop Inn, Pig Hip Restaurant, Miz Zip’s Cafe, Red’s Giant Hamburg,
Cotton Eyed Joe’s, the Mid-Point Café and the Country Dove.
The book is a living history of a time when
flavors along the road changed right along with the scenery.
Most of the eateries profiled in the book are still in business.
Others remain alive in the memories of thousands of ordinary patrons.
So step inside, slide into a booth, and sample an
unforgettable collection of gastronomic treats - crispy chicken fried steak,
juicy meatloaf, smoky barbeque,
fried okra, bread pudding,
maple “sirip” bars, and a mouthwatering slice of Oklahoma pecan pie.
Top it off with a cup of coffee as black as the midnight sky and you are
well on your way to highway heaven!
Fast food and convenience stores may be the norm along
today’s freeways but travelers seeking real adventure still takes the roads
less traveled. In doing so,
they’re never quite sure what might be around the next curve but the
unexpected culinary delights are always worth the effort.
